I admit it. I am in love with my iPhone. I never leave home without it. I will even sometimes walk from room to room with it while in my house. It is truly one of the best tools I have ever used. Not only do I use it to track my tasks, organize my finances and stay connected to my peeps, I also use it for menu planning, grocery shopping and cooking. And if I am just too tired to cook, it also helps me make a restaurant reservation.
This week’s post focuses on those apps that help you select the perfect restaurant when you are traveling or just too darn tired to cook. Stay tuned for upcoming posts on other food-related apps to make getting dinner on the table easier and fun.
1. UrbanSpoon (FREE)
UrbanSpoon is just fun. Not sure where you want to eat? Give UrbanSpoon a shake and like a slot machine it spins around and lands on a restaurant suggestion. Want to keep the meal moderately priced? Lock in the dollar amount you want to spend. Lock-ins are also possible for the location and type of cuisine.
2. OpenTable (FREE)
I love OpenTable. It allows you to easily scan through its large list of quality restaurants (no chains here!) by location, type of cuisine and availability. Reviews are usually very well written and reservations can be made right from your mobile device.
3. Foodspotting (FREE)
A picture is worth a thousand words. This app shows you photos of foods enjoyed by other diners to help you determine whether a restaurant is worth trying. If you are new to the area or just visiting it is a great resource. Couple the photos with a good review in OpenTable and the restaurant is sure to satisify.
4. Local Eats ($0.99)
Locals know best. If you are traveling to another city and want to eat where the locals go rather than follow the herd to the typical tourist destinations, try this app. Reviews are based on local media reviews, blogger reviews, and critics and showcase the top 100 restaurants in 50 major cities.
5. Restaurant Nutrition (FREE)
If you are ready for a dose of calorie reality, take a look at the nutritional information for your favorite restaurants using the Restaurant Nutrition app. We all deserve a good meal at a restaurant now and again but this resource helps to keep us in check.
