If you will have kids at your Thanksgiving dinner this year, you need some ideas to keep them entertained. How about getting them out of the house? To do a neighborhood Thanksgiving scavenger hunt that is.
The meal has been eaten. Everyone is stuffed. The kids are getting restless and starting to tear up the house. Give everyone a Thanksgiving Scavenger Hunt sheet and send ’em outside while the coffee is brewing and the desserts are assembled. This gives the adults and the children alike a much needed break. The adults can enjoy a bit of quiet conversation time inside while the kids can stretch their legs and burn off a bit of energy outdoors before the sweets arrive.
This activity has become a tradition in our household and if we forget about the scavenger hunt, one of the kids will now remind us! Why not add this activity to your family traditions too?
Thanksgiving Scavenger Hunt
Time to work off some of that Thanksgiving meal! Gather the kids and head outside to look for the following around the neighborhood.
- Halloween decorations
- Smoke from a chimney
- People playing football
- Out of state license plate
- Acorns
- Squirrel carrying nuts
- Wild turkey
- Deer
- Barking dog
- Red leaves
- Yellow leaves
- Green leaves
- Thanksgiving decorations
- A pile of leaves (good for jumping into!)

At first I thought the children were tasked with bringing items back to the house! I instantly became filled with anxiety. I got a visual of a group of kids removing someones Halloween decorations while a nosy HOA member snapped pictures!
This is a great idea! Thanks for sharing.

Ha ha! That could add some drama to your Thanksgiving day!

Now THAT is a great idea– get out and moving after the big meal! My kids are a little too young, but next year for sure we’re going to start this tradition. Fantastic idea, I’m stumbling it AND putting it on my blog’s Facebook page!

Yes, it definitely feels good to move around a bit after such a heavy meal. Plus, you need to find room for dessert, right? 🙂
